Track Mountain gorillas in Bwindi, Uganda

Uganda is home to half of the World’s population of Mountain gorillas. These endangered primates are found in Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks. When you see these gentle giants, it is such an exhilarating experience.

Gorilla Trekking can sometimes be strenuous. Gorillas usually migrate from one place to another. When you finally come face to face with them, the tiredness is replaced with a smile.

The Bwindi forest is a habitat of other species of mammals and endemic birds. On a lucky day, a visitor might see chimpanzees, monkeys, duikers, forest elephants and the rare Africa forest hog.

Gorilla tracking is available all year round. However, best times to visit Bwindi are the dry months of June to September and December to February. Dry trails easy for trekking. In April to May, heavy rainfall, makes trails very wet thus making trekking more challenging.

The Serengeti and Ngorongoro areas are associated with the great migration. Here large herds of gazelles, wildebeests, zebras move long distances in search of green pastures. Their journey is not free from challenges. It involves crossing crocodile infested waters and predator territory especially through the Serengeti to Masai Mara. The predator and prey encounters are mouth- watering scenes. These destinations are endowed with plenty of wildlife which includes the Big five.

As part of the East Africa Safari, Uganda is home to an estimated 5,000 chimpanzees across the tropical forests. Kibale Forest National park is considered the primate capital of East Africa. It is home to 1500 chimpanzees and other 12 resident primates, is an ideal place to include on your safari. Chimpanzee tracking is the common activity at the park. You can track these playful primates and sometimes hunters of other primates. Enjoy 1 hour viewing them. Enjoy an all-day chimpanzee habituation experience. With habituation you will learn more from researchers about their behavior, family structures and reproduction.

Habituation is a process of taming wild animals to accept close range interaction with humans. Uganda should be your favorite destination for chimpanzee trekking or habituation experience.

The endangered Mountain Gorilla is the star attraction in the national park. Travellers to Rwanda visit Volcanoes National Park to encounter the Mountain Gorilla in its natural habitat. It borders Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo. Tracking Gorillas is best done during the dry seasons (June to September) when the trails are drier. Trails are slippery in the rainy season (March to May) making gorilla trekking difficult.

The Best of an African Kenya Safari

Plan the best Kenya safari—Maasai Mara migration, Amboseli elephants, Tsavo lions, Nakuru flamingos, beaches & Maasai culture.

Kenya is Africa’s best safari destination. It is no coincidence that Safari was born in Kenya. It is a journey undertaken by travellers away from home. In Arabic “safar” means travel and Safari in Swahili.

During the 14th century the Arab trader arrived at the Indian Ocean Coast coastline. At the time, the Arab visitors were more concerned with their trade not wildlife expeditions.

Maasai Mara is the most visited game reserve. It is famous for the great migration where zebras and wildebeest follow the rainy season in search for pastures. It is such a spectacular scene to see hundreds of animals moving in one direction. As they cross the Mara river, the predators too (crocodiles) lie in ambush as the African elephants roam the savannas and the predating big cats chase their prey.

The plains are teeming with plenty of wildlife. Discover the authentic Maasai culture and the flamingos in Nakuru.

Kenya is an all year-round safari destination offering excellent wildlife viewing. Each destination has its own safari experience. Kenya tropical climate along the equator is ideal for an all year-round safari.

Most hydro dam critics have been passionate about the falls remaining as is. For the passionate Tour operator’s association, they took the spirited campaign seriously by sharing their opinion in writing. Most people put up a spirited campaign on social media platforms face book and twitter. It was the easiest way for the public to show their concern about conservation for future generations.

Mountain gorilla naming ceremonies, called Kwita Izina, play an important part in Rwanda’s culture and tradition. In September each year, at the end of a week-long program of activities, a naming ceremony is held for newly born baby gorillas in the Volcanoes Biosphere Reserve.

Each baby is given a different name to reflect the infant’s story and heritage and to harness good luck and protection. The purpose of the naming ceremony is to make it easier to identify and monitor each mountain gorilla.

This event is not only a celebration of gorillas but also serves to raise aware of the importance of the protected species and their habitats.

          Safari prices

in Uganda depend on a number of factors. We like to consider your safari as an investment. You’re spending your money to create memories that you will cherish for a lifetime.

But what goes into the cost of a Ugandan safari? We’re glad you asked!

There are a number of factors that contribute to the final price tag that gets attached to your Ugandan safari:

          Why Safari Prices In Uganda

          Duration

The safari price is influenced by its length. For those on a tight budget, you might want to consider a shorter itinerary.

          Standard of accommodation

Accommodation is a huge part of the final cost of your Ugandan safari. Thankfully, Uganda offers something for all budgets. From camping out under the stars to affordable lodges, there is something to suit any taste. Your Rafiki Safaris expert can prepare a quote using budget, medium, or luxury accommodations. They can also provide you with a mix of different styles to tailor the experience to your tastes and budget.

          Choice of National parks

Not all national parks are created equal. Bwindi National Park, for example, charges a much higher entrance fee than Kidepo National Park.

; These range from relatively affordable adventures such as guided walking safaris to pricier options such as night game drives, rafting, hiking, fishing and bungee jumping.

          Number of travelers

; the number of people sharing a vehicle is a huge factor in deciding the per person cost of a safari. One person on their own is not only paying for their park entry fees and accommodation, but also bears the full cost of the car, professional guide, and all associated fees.

          Time of year

; Prices are highest during the peak seasons of December – February and June – August, when lodges are getting plenty of business. If you’re looking to save some money on your Ugandan safari, consider visiting in April or May when the rainy season sees many luxury lodges lower their rates to a fraction of what they would usually be.

All of the above come into the equation when your Rafiki Safaris expert is calculating the cost of your Ugandan safari adventure.

A four-day camping safari with six people is going to be cheaper per person than a five-day luxury safari for two people.

Gorillas, our closest relatives in the animal kingdom, are under constant threat due to habitat loss, poaching, disease, and human-wildlife conflict. These challenges have caused a significant decline in their populations, particularly Mountain Gorillas, which were once on the brink of extinction.

World Gorilla Day aims to draw attention to these threats while celebrating the success stories of conservation efforts that have helped save these magnificent creatures from further decline. Thanks to years of collaborative efforts by governments, non-profit organizations, and local communities, Mountain Gorillas are no longer classified as critically endangered but remain under the “Endangered” category.

World Gorilla Day is not just about raising awareness but also about taking meaningful action to protect gorillas and their ecosystems. Here are some ways you can participate and make a difference:

: Many organizations work tirelessly to protect gorillas in the wild. Consider donating to or volunteering with conservation groups like the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH), or Gorilla Doctors, all of which are committed to the long-term survival of gorillas.

Role of wildlife rangers in fighting poaching and how conservation efforts and communities are engaged to protect endangered species

In 2024, the world celebrated World Ranger Day. The spotlight was cast on the tireless efforts of wildlife rangers across the world. They risk their lives daily to safeguard the continent’s wildlife from the ever-looming threat of poaching. These brave individuals patrol national parks day and night, fighting to protect endangered species like elephants, giraffes, and gorillas. Wildlife protection ensures that Africa’s rich biodiversity can continue for future generations.

Wildlife rangers play a critical role in the fight against poaching. Their day-to-day duties involve patrolling vast landscapes, often with limited resources, to track poachers and prevent illegal hunting. Whether it’s walking through the dense forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or monitoring the savannas of Murchison Falls National Park, rangers are on constant alert, facing dangerous and unpredictable encounters. The rangers’ presence alone serves as a deterrent to would-be poachers, and their vigilance helps protect animals like elephants and giraffes, often the most targeted species.

The global COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges for conservation efforts. With tourism halted and fewer eyes watching over the parks, poachers took advantage of the situation, and illegal hunting surged. Wildlife rangers were the first line of defense, stepping up to combat the increase in poaching. These rangers worked tirelessly, to ensure that the wild animals were kept safe, despite their safety being at an even higher risk.

As the fight against poaching intensified, technology became a powerful ally. Phones and social media campaigns have helped raise awareness about anti-poaching efforts. They provide rangers with critical information on poaching activities and help to mobilize resources more quickly. These tools also empower communities to report suspicious activities and play a part in protecting the wildlife.

          Challenges Faced by Wildlife Rangers

Despite their efforts, rangers face significant challenges. Many national parks, have porous borders. It makes it easy for poachers to access wildlife areas. These vast, unguarded entry points are often exploited by poachers who know the terrain well and can escape detection.

Wildlife rangers are also up against sophisticated poachers. They use advanced weaponry and tactics. On top of this, human-wildlife conflict exacerbates the problem. Local communities sometimes resort to harmful practices like poisoning or physical confrontations to protect their crops and livestock from wildlife.

To help support the work of wildlife rangers, several initiatives and funds have been created. Examples include, Uganda Conservation Foundation, Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH), World Wildlife Fund and community-led efforts like Save Wildlife Uganda have provided much-needed financial and logistical resources. These initiatives have helped to reduce poaching and also contributed to the recovery of species populations, such as elephants, gorillas, lions and giraffes.

This has influenced how communities perceive national parks and the animals within them. The program has helped build a foundation for long-term conservation success.

Poaching doesn’t just lead to the death of animals; it can also cause horrific injuries. Many animals, in their attempt to escape traps and snares, suffer severe injuries like amputations or infections. This can also lead to death if left untreated. This highlights the cruelty of poaching and underscores the urgent need for stronger conservation efforts.

To address this, community engagement has become an essential part of conservation. Efforts have been made to equip and train communities on how to safely deter the wild animals. The Wildlife authorities have set up electric fences around protected areas like Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Parks. At Queen Elizabeth National Park, trenches have been dug by locals like Bukorwe Deo who prevents elephants from crossing into human settlements, significantly reducing conflict.

Another major challenge facing conservation efforts is the increasing human-wildlife conflict due to habitat encroachment. Agricultural expansion, land degradation, and fragmented landscapes continue to threaten wildlife habitats. Animals and humans have been forced into closer proximity. Thus in some cases, local communities feel that their livelihoods are threatened by wildlife. This can lead to confrontations like the tragic incident with Rafiki the gorilla in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The Silverback was killed in a conflict with humans.

Community involvement in conservation is essential for long-term success. Initiatives that provide alternative income sources are helping to shift perceptions of wildlife from a threat to a valuable asset. Programs led by Save Wildlife Uganda, in partnership with Rafiki Safaris, are educating communities on the benefits of conserving wildlife. It shows local communities that they can prosper alongside wildlife. These initiatives are helping to build a future where both people and animals can thrive.

Poaching remains a critical threat to Africa’s wildlife, but with the continued dedication of wildlife rangers and the support of conservation initiatives, there is hope for the future. As we celebrate the efforts of wildlife rangers, we must also recognize sustainable conservation. It requires a collective effort from governments, communities, and organizations. With continued support, poaching can be curtailed. Therefore, Africa’s unique wildlife can continue to flourish for generations to come.
