The waterfalls mesmerized Sir Samuel Baker who later named them after Sir Roderick Murchison the President of Royal Geographical society at the time.

This National park hosts a variety of mammals like; elephants, Giraffes, Lions, leopards, Hartebeest. Birds include African fish eagle, storks, love birds and Kingfishers. The iconic Shoebill bird can be seen during the dry months of January to March.

A boat safari to the bottom of the falls rewards you with amazing views of the hippos and crocodiles basking in the sun. Hiking to the top of the Falls is another exciting activity. A misty water splash and deafening sound of the waterfall welcomes you at the top. The hiking trail was used by Winston Churchill in 1907.

Kidepo Valley National Park – the hidden gem

Volcanoes National Park-the Gorilla habitat in Rwanda

Uganda Cabinet in the latest sitting has agreed to drop the proposal to construct a Dam on River Nile near Murchison falls.

Minister of tourism Ephraim Kamuntu said that the dam will “affect the scenery, ecosystem and subsequently tourism”.

Genocide Memorial Museum

The cemetery at the museum contains the remains of people collected from all over Rwanda who died during the genocide. Every family in Rwanda has a story about their loss in this tragic event.

Presidential Palace Museum

A major tourist attraction in Kigali is the Presidential Palace Museum which is the former home of the late Juvenal Habyarimana – Rwanda’s last president before the 1994 genocide.

As well as enjoying the cultural and historical displays, you can explore all the rooms and grounds of the stately home including a chapel, gym, banquet room, a nightclub and even a python pit. Also on view is a wreckage from the Falcon 50 presidential plane which was shot down on 6 April 1994 killing the president and all 12 on board.

Kwita Izina — Gorilla Naming Ceremony

Mountain gorilla naming ceremonies, called Kwita Izina, play an important part in Rwanda’s culture and tradition. In September each year, at the end of a week-long program of activities, a naming ceremony is held for newly born baby gorillas in the Volcanoes Biosphere Reserve.

Each baby is given a different name to reflect the infant’s story and heritage and to harness good luck and protection. The purpose of the naming ceremony is to make it easier to identify and monitor each mountain gorilla.

This event is not only a celebration of gorillas but also serves to raise aware of the importance of the protected species and their habitats.

Baby namers are carefully chosen to include individuals both globally and locally who have made a great contribution to conservation efforts both in Rwanda and the world.

Kwita Izina also raises much needed funds through ticket sales for the ceremony, and invites the Rwandans to celebrate and preserve their natural and cultural heritage.

Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda

Virunga Conservation Area is shared by Rwanda, Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo. It is a habitat of different fauna and flora. Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is part of the Virunga massif that hosts different mammal species and endemic plants. The National park is famously known for its gorilla trekking activities. It is the best place in Rwanda to track the endangered Mountain Gorilla.

Primatologist Dian Fossey dedicated twenty years studying the Mountain Gorillas at Volcanoes National Park. Gorilla tracking is a whole year activity. Bunyangabu Beekeeping Cooperative (BBC), is a community organization using nature’s gifts to live in harmony with the environment. BBC’s apiary is well stocked with all types of bee-hives ranging from traditional to modern ones.

BBC sells pure honey, beeswax candles, and propolis tinctures in small bottles. If you are lucky, when you visit, you can pick up some of their award-winning cream honey – the best in East Africa.

This beekeeping cooperative offers a true honey experience. Visitors can see honey processing, taste honey from the comb, and even make their own candles to take home.

Ngamba Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Surrounded by the peaceful waters of Lake Victoria, Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is home to 49 orphaned chimpanzees rescued from the illegal pet and bushmeat trade.

Despite their initial trauma, chimps living at Ngamba have a safe and semi-natural environment in which to recover and eventually thrive, living up to 60 years in their new home.

Founded in 1998, the island is 95 acres of natural forest where the chimps roam and forage daily. Tourists are invited to observe supplemental feeding from a viewing platform.

The chimps have the freedom to stay in the forest at night or return to night time enclosures where they can build nests and receive an evening meal.

All funds raised from visitors is used to provide care for the orphaned and rescued chimpanzees.
